THE TREVISO AREA. WOOD & FURNITURE INDUSTRY CLUSTERS

The Province of Treviso holds the third place within the Veneto Region for the number of companies there. The territory of Treviso is characterized by a good mind for manufacturing production.

The main industry sectors are: domestic appliances, wood and furniture, footwear and clothes.

Export is very important in that industrial area, especially domestic appliances and wood&furniture. Recently, East European countries have become more and more involved in export activities with Treviso.
The Treviso economy has been characterized by a delocalization process in recent years, but now it seems that it is not longer suitable. It is better to refer to the economic changes within the territory using the word internationalization or productive replacement.

The implications of this are:

  • to resort less to immigration;
  • to move some activities to other areas in the world;
  • to promote foreign investment in the territory;
  • to invest in infrastructure (transports etc.).

In particular, the wood and furniture industry is very important for the economy of that area.
Venetian-Friulian wood and furniture clusters cover a large area between the so-called sinistra Piave, in the province of Treviso, and Pordenone.

Initially there were two different clusters (the Venetian one and the Friulian one), but then they grew to such an extent as to become one single cluster.
This cluster is the largest area of wood & furniture production in Italy.
The main products are: home furniture, office furniture, wood components and unfinished products.

The furniture sector's development began in the 1950s, when the homemade work of some joiners spawned industrial furniture factories and some other companies were born thanks to the entrepreneurial initiative of family-owned companies in the area.

According to the experience of the Italian industrial districts, promoting the rise of new clusters in specific regions or countries, as well as increasing the collaboration between clusters internationally, is a chance to sustain companies' competitive advantages. This is due to the fact that companies can have access to new know-how, knowledge and expertise, in addition to what is available at the local level.
